Peach

Peach (2020) is a wonderful and all too relatable short film about the age old question, is it a date?

Sarah (Rose Haining) and Peach (Eleanore Knox) meet at a party and seemingly hit it off. They decide Peach will come over to watch the iconic film Alien. Their mutual love of Sigourney Weaver could be a give away of Peach’s sexuality but Sarah is unsure. Sarah and her housemate Jennifer (Amanda Maple-Brown) attempt to use social media to work out is Peach straight or gay? But as we all know, social media is notoriously unreliable and sexuality itself can’t be pinned down just by external traits.

The film follows the date, or not date, and Sarah’s journey of confidence and self doubt. It’s funny and sweet in its simplicity. With Haining and Knox both so believable in their characters, Hainings vulnerability and Knox’s hard to read facade. Maple-Brown brings a sweet and mum-like awkwardness that anyone with a keen housemate would know very well.

Applause should go to Writer and Directors Rowan Devereux and Sophie Saville who both have a number of shorts under their hats, with surely many more to come. The script and pace of the evening shown was like looking into the window of any mid-20’s inner city share house. They have put together an easy and fun watch that so many can connect to.

Peach is relatable and frustrating in all the right ways. A reminder that the best way to know is to maybe just ask, is this a date?
