Scary Movie Review
For fans of the genre, this might be a welcome return. But it’s scary how disinteresting and unfunny this can be.
Scary Movie is back, and properly this time - with the full original cast back in the saddle.
If you’re a fan of the series, there’s plenty to love here. A throwback to the spoof comedies of years ago, complete with an irreverent sense of comedy that feels ripped from its own different time. There’s no lack of swipes at various protected groups, gory violence, sexual innuendo, and of course a complete takedown of a suite of new and old horror films and tropes.
And at times, Scary Movie can be funny. There are a handful of jokes that have you laughing out loud, and a few more that give you a small chuckle.
But the problem is that this overstuffed spoofy comedy is far too sparse on jokes that actually hit.
It’s tough to judge a film based on the humor when the spoof genre is such its own beast. But even for a spoof film, this seems to have fewer jokes that actually land than usual. Then there’s the performances, which are often phoned in, and the story, which is nonexistent and nonsense.
Overall, Scary Movie is a film that is unlikely to convert any new fans to the spoof genre if they aren’t already firmly entrenched. And for those who aren’t, it is an interminable time in the theatre. But if you love this genre, and loved the original Scary Movie’s, then you will most likely find this one a welcome return to form for the franchise.
