Ready or Not 2: Here We Come Review
Bloody, brutal and bigger than the last, this update on the surprise smash hit feels earned, if not quite as strong.
After the events of the first film, Grace (Samara Weaving) finds herself in a hospital bed with a very suspicious cop intent on arresting her, and her long lost sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) by her side. But when a bloody killer storms the hospital, Grace realises her trials aren’t over. Instead, she’s taken to Danforth Lodge by a Lawyer (Elijah Wood), and thrown into a life or death killing spree once again - this time for control of a mysterious council that serves Satan.
Ready or Not was a fun little surprise of a film; hyper violent, debaucherous, and inimitably surprising. It’s that missing surprise that makes this outing a little less of a blast, alongside a somewhat less tight script.
The plot, which somewhat rehashes the last film but tries to expand the lore, isn’t quite as well-thought out as the previous, and you find yourself with some uninspired deaths leading to an outrageous OTT finale that misses a bit of the glorious gore of the first.
That being said, there’s still plenty on offer here. The sisterly bond adds a level of difference to this film, while also giving an outlet for Grace to express more dialogue, and the cast has been levelled up with the villains. Elijah Wood in particular is wonderfully devilish.
Ultimately, if you liked the first, be prepared for more of the same, if slightly less polished. If you thought the first was a bit too out there or gory for your tastes, probably keep away.
